Not Just Contribution, but DedicationJune 17 / 2019
Last week, PeaceWorx visited the three-day conference, Mañana Empieza Hoy. As a platform for conversations surrounding sustainable development goals and innovation, the event hosted presentations, project booths, and student artwork. The main objective of Manana Empieza Hoy is to raise awareness and promote critical thinking about how we can better our world; that’s why some of our favorite presentations involved protecting the environment.
One environmental presentation came from Spanish Entrepeneur, Javier Goyeneche, who created Ecoalf. Ecoalf has been turning various waste products into usable fabrics since 2015, pushing our society towards sustainable living. Another presentation came from La Asociación Cultural Despierta CEO, Ángel Cano. Cano discussed the real issues and feasible solutions to climate change that can be implemented right now.
While there were many interesting presentations about climate change, urban contaminants, and sustainable technology, one that really caught our attention was by Ocean52 founder, Santi Meir. Ocean52 not only produces healthy beverages in plastic free containers, but they also give 52% of their profits to initiatives that protect the oceans. Some of these initiatives include ecosystem regeneration, beach clean ups, and environmental education, in order to provide long term change.
Meir’s presentation highlighted statistics and facts about ocean degradation. For example, there is projected to be more plastic than fish in the ocean by the year 2052. Additionally, though we cannot see micropollutants in our water, they are still capable of making us sick.
Companies such as Ocean52, Ecoalf, and La Asociación Cultural Despierta don’t simply support environmental protection, they are dedicated to it, and we were lucky to see so many shared ideas in one place. Mañana Empieza Hoy is the perfect event to unite such dedicated individuals and companies to improve our world and inspire change and innovation.
